We live in a time where almost everyone has a smartphone, and we have them on us at all times. Plenty of people still prefer the paper copy in-hand—there’s nothing quite like the smell and feel of an old book. But carrying around a few novels everywhere you travel can get quite cumbersome.

Here are a few apps to try to lighten your load, while still enjoying as many books as you’d like!

 

Goodreads (FREE)

An app for every reader! They have over one million books that you can search, rate, review, or add to your want-to-read list. You can add status updates and mark the page number of books you are currently reading, and you can even scan all of your own books from home into your Goodreads shelves.

 

Amazon Kindle (FREE)

Also with over one million titles, the Amazon Kindle app is a wonderful choice for an avid reader! Thousands of free classics are available in the Kindle Store, and over 600,000 titles are priced at $9.99 or less – including many of the New York Times Best Sellers. Unsure of whether you’ll like a book? The Kindle app lets you read the first chapter for free before you decide to buy. The app is completely customizable, you can change the background color and font size. Easy search inside the book to find a character, topic, or scene you’d like to revisit.

iReaditNow (FREE)

Compatible with iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch

Archive books you have read, have not read, and want to read, add new books in with a barcode scanner, attach notes on each book and more! iReaditNow creates graphs that show your reading life and allows you to instantly share what you’re reading over many social media platforms. Premium Membership is free for a year and $2.99/year after. You can upgrade to Premium Membership only from iReadItNow HD (iPad version). User comments have said this app is very straightforward, easy to use, and not littered with ads.

 

Audible (FREE to download – 14.95$/month after 30 days)

Listen to your books wherever you are with our free app—at home, in the car, at the gym. Even if you switch devices, you’ll never lose your place. There’s A-list celebrities narrating their favorite stories, full-cast performances, Grammy award-winning audiobooks, and more.

 

Apple iBooks (FREE to download)

Browse featured books list to find new releases and best sellers, and preview books while you’re browsing and download free samples. Check out the Top Charts to see what is popular with other readers. There are many different options for customization, including eight different fonts and four-page colors. Auto-Night Theme is available to make reading more comfortable on your eyes in low lighting. Print PDFs and notes you’ve written via AirPrint, and iCloud allows you to sync your books across multiple devices and pick up where you left off.

This app includes the complete works of Shakespeare (41 plays, 154 sonnets, and 6 poems – including the doubtful works).
