We chatted with Kristen Hunt, author of The Blonde Eskimo, about her inspirations for her debut novel and why marine biology will never be a viable career choice for her.

What was your biggest inspirations while writing your book?

The adventures my sister and I had in Alaska and the stories/legends our family would tell us.

Which character in your book is most like yourself?

Neiva…I really didn’t intend for her to be similar like me but she started developing some of my characteristics and personality.

Which authors have most influenced your writing?

L.J. Smith – She was the first author I fell in love with. I read her books throughout middle school and high school (mid-late 90s).

Tell us about a scene in your novel that’s inspired by real life.

Well, this is a hard question… I would have to say when Neiva is on the beach preforming her rite of passage. This scene actually happened in real life. I experienced going out in a storm to search the beaches for walrus bodies. When I saw the walrus on the beach it was both frightening and exciting at the same time.

What is something your readers would be surprised to know about you? Well, most people know that I am a twin…So, I would have to say the fact I‘m part Eskimo. Let’s just say there’s enough Eskimo blood in me for the Bureau of Indian Affairs to issue me an ID card. I know with the blonde hair and green eyes you wouldn’t suspect it. That’s my Swedish heritage, a whole different story and set of legends.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A marine biologist…but then I found out I get seasick.
