To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You

Following the success of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, the adaption of Jenny Han’s novel by the same name, Netflix green-lighted the next two movies in the series. To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, based on the second book, P. S. I Still Love You, was just released in February. In it, one of the other recipients of Lara Jean’s letters, John Ambrose, comes back into her life. This causes tension in her new relationship with Peter.

The End of the F***ing World

This violent Netflix Original is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Charles Forsman. While Netflix did make some major changes (the original takes place in the Midwest and the adaption in the south of England, in the original gives a lot less information about the rapist, new character additions, etc.), the heart of the story remains the same. Two misfit teens, James and Alyssa, run away together. Chaos ensues.

Girlboss

Based on the New York Times bestselling memoir, #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso, this Netflix Original series follows the rise of Amoruso’s multi-million dollar fashion empire, Nasty Gal. She hunts down vintage clothing from thrift stores, photographs it, and re-sells it online. With hard work, she turns this passion into a business and ultimately an empire. While this puts strain on her relationships, she becomes a #girlboss.

The Fundamentals of Caring

Based on Jonathan Evision’s novel The Revised Fundamentals of Caring, this adaption follows Ben, a retired-writer-turned-caregiver, and Trevor, his 18-year-old patient with muscular dystrophy. They decide to go on a road trip to see the world’s deepest pit. On the way, they pick up Dot, a hitchhiker about Trevor’s age, and Peaches, a pregnant woman whose car has broken down.

Queen of Katwe

Following the true story of Phiona Mutesi, Queen of Katwe is an inspirational film about chess and overcoming obstacles. It is based on the biography of the same name by Tim Cothers. Watch as Phiona goes from a nine-year-old learning chess from a missionary to Uganda’s junior chess champion at eleven. At fifteen, she earns the title of national champion, and continues to work toward being a Grandmaster while coping with everyday life in Uganda.

Dumplin’

This Netflix Original movie about learning to love your body is based on the feel-good YA novel of the same name by Julie Murphy. It follows a self-proclaimed fat girl, Willowdean “Dumplin’” Dickson in the summer following the death of the aunt who raised her. Upon discovering that her aunt had wanted to enter a beauty pageant but decided against it, she decides to enter to honor her.

Silver Linings Playbook

Based on The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick, this adaptation follows Patrisio “Pat” Solitano Jr., a man recently released from a psychiatric hospital determined to win back his wife. Tiffany Maxwell, a young widow and sister of his friend’s wife, offers to help him. The catch? He must enter a dance competition with her. As they train for the competition, they grow closer, and begin to fall for each other.

The series that had everyone asking does this spark joy? is based on the #1 New York Times bestseller of the same name, written by the star of the show, Marie Kondo. Her revolutionary category-by-category system of simplifying and organizing your home leads to lasting results. She believes that a tidy home can inspire a calm, motivated mindset.
