Bullet journaling is an organizational system created in 2013 by Ryder Caroll, a digital designer and author. Caroll sought to create an alternate version of ways to write monthly planners and shared his idea with the world through his website Bullet Journal. Who knew that this method would become not only a major trend, but also introduced a new way of planning in the following years to come?

Here are a few ways to get started on your new 2022 bullet journal!

Why Bullet Journal?

This method is a great way to stay organized! It’s also proven to be a productive way to improve mental health by staying busy and tracking your progress and goals throughout the year. Creativity is crucial when starting a bullet journal. Try to make it as personal and as true to oneself as it can be. Having a journal can also be a great outlet to relieve stress by painting, sketching, planning, and writing.

Pick Your Supplies

Looking for the right supplies to use in your bullet journaling can be exciting, but there can be a lot to choose from. It may be overwhelming to see all the available options in stores. However, a favorite few show great results, whether it’s the overall quality of the journal itself or the formatting style you use within it.

  • Thread-bound or Spiral-bound?

It all comes down to personal preference when picking your journal. Thread-bound journals are the most popular option in terms of bullet journaling as they’re of better value, such as the quality of the pages. On the other hand, spiral-bound journals are more helpful when it comes to taking notes and they can lay flat on the table without having to press down on the journal so it stays in place–an unavoidable situation with thread-bound journals.

  • Grid or Dotted Paper?

Dotted paper is an excellent choice to keep your handwriting neat and in a straight line while also keeping the journal aesthetically pleasing. In comparison, grid paper is ideal for drawing and organizing notes.

  • Ink Proof Paper

If you plan on painting or using markers, ink proof paper is a must. Paper quality is essential, especially if you’re using markers and highlighters that are alcohol-based and prone to bleed through the pages.

  • Colored Pens and Pencils

If you’re hoping to create an aesthetically pleasing journal, pastel colors are usually the go-to when it comes to journaling. Pale pinks, baby blues, and soft greens always look lovely on paper! However, if pastels aren’t preferred, vibrant colors that pop out of the page are also great.

Create a Key

A few bullet journals have included keys to help guide newcomers; however, if there isn’t one, here are a few ideas on how to create one for yourself. It may seem overwhelming to make a key or index without any idea on how to get started, but once each key is established to a specific objective, it can become much more constructive.

  • : A dot, in this case, can signify a task that needs to be done on the to-do list.

x : the ‘x’ is a key that can be used to mark the said task as complete.

      – : a dash is a note or a reminder.

★ : a star can be used to mark a priority that can’t be ignored.

Explore Creative Lettering Styles

Lettering, much like drawings, colors, and themes, contribute to the aesthetic you’re looking for. If you’re not keen on lettering, that isn’t a problem–but here are a few examples you could use to spruce up your journal:

  • Calligraphy

  • Retro

  • Serif

  • Elegant

Consider What You Want to Prioritize

There is no limit to what you can center your bullet journal around, so long as it’s enjoyable. Use it for your hobbies, tasks, or goals. Doodle, write lists, record your thoughts and memories that impacted you, or anything else you feel is important. Once you know and create your journal’s main themes and purpose, finding the motivation to write and plan will inspire you to continue your journaling journey!
