June is Pride Month, and since we love a good book-to-movie adaption, this year we’re celebrating with some of the great adaptions you can find on Netflix.

Freak Show based on the novel by James St. James

This story of queer teenager named Billy at an ultra-conservative high school who decides to run for Homecoming Queen has quite the star-studded cast. Alex Lawther plays Billy, and his costars include Abigail Breslin, AnnaSophia Robb, Laverne Cox, and Bette Midler.

Brokeback Mountain based on short story by Annie Proulx

Known for being the gay cowboy movie, and often credited for bringing queer cinema into the mainstream, many people forget that Brokeback Mountain was originally a short story. Starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, it chronicles the emotional and sexual relationship between their characters.

We the Animals based on the novel by Justin Torres

Shot at a child’s height to create a feeling of intimacy and with a documentarian’s eye, We The Animals won the Sundance NEXT Innovator award. It follows Jonah as he grows up in a mixed-race, working-class family in upstate New York, and contends with his homosexuality and a volatile father.

Ratched inspired by One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey

This thriller series serves as a prequel to the 1975 film adaption of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, depicting the life of Mildred Ratched. She works as a nurse at a psychiatric high school, infiltrating the mental health care system to break her brother out. Meanwhile, she begins to fall in love with a woman, Gwendolyn.

Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List based on novel of same name by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

This story about best friends, a gay man and a straight woman, centers around the idea that in order to avoid jealousy between them, they have a list of men neither of them can kiss. Things get a little messy when Ely (played by Pierson Fodé) and kisses Bruce II, Naomi’s (played by Victoria Justice) boyfriend.

Let it Snow based on the novel by Maureen Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle

This movie follows three holiday romance stories taking place in the town of Laurel, Illinois—one of which is gay. In that one, Dorrie is trying to juggle the demands of her best friend, Addie, making a scene with her boyfriend, with an attempt to get Kerry, a cheerleader she hooked up with and is pretending not to know her, while working at a Waffle Town.

Unorthodox based on the memoir by Deborah Feldman

The first Netflix series to be primarily in Yiddish, this miniseries follows a young Jewish woman in an ultra-Orthodox community and an unhappy arranged marriage, who escapes to Berlin. There, she tries to navigate a more secular life, meanwhile being pursued by her husband who has learned that she is pregnant.
