Summer is all about fun and entertainment and this summer is no exception! Adaptations are an easy way to appreciate literature without having to spend hours reading it. This year we are celebrating summer with adaptations. These quality adaptations will stream across various platforms.

What was new in July?

Gossip Girl

 This reboot of the popular book series by Cecily von Ziegesar is coming back to our screens—this time, via HBO Max. It follows the scandalous lives of the young New York elite, and the consequences of their actions when their secrets are leaked to the world on social media. This adaptation follows a different generation of New York’s elite. While the premise remains the same, it does not follow the original Gossip Girl storyline.

Snowpiercer (2013)

This futuristic graphic novel series by Jacques Lob

became a popular movie in 2013. Starring Chris Evans, this movie begins seven years after the world becomes a frozen wasteland, and follows the remnants of humanity who have taken shelter on a perpetually moving luxury train. The movie is available to watch it on Netflix—not to be confused with the TV adaptation, which can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

Virgin River

The popular television show is based on the book series by Robyn Carr. The book series is comprised of 21 novels and follows the life of the small-town of Virgin River, California. This Netflix Original drama broke a Netflix record for being in the top ten rankings for the longest amount of time. Full of life, love, and drama, the third installment of this thrilling adaptation dropped on Netflix in July.

The Twilight Saga Movies (2008-2012)

Based on the Stephanie Meyer Twilight series, these five movies follow the love story of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) as they navigate the complications of love between a human and a vampire. This adaptation remains faithful to the books, and even divided the last book into two movies to remain true to the novel. You can binge these popular movies on Netflix starting in July.

The Kissing Booth 3

The Kissing Booth became a popular Netflix film series after being adapted from the book series by Beth Reekles. This series follows Elle Evans as she begins to develop feelings for her best friend’s brother, Noah Flynn. Through high school drama, hardships, and a long distance relationship, Elle Evans is trying to figure her life out one step at a time. The third installment of the The Kissing Booth series is coming to Netflix this August.

Suicide Squad

The Suicide Squad is an adaptation of the DC Comic book series by the same name. It is about an unlikely group of individuals, chosen for their bizarre talents, to become a group of heroes. If they don’t defy their villainous ways, they risk their lives. Starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, John Cena as Peacemaker, and Sylvester Stallone as King Shark the second installation to this infamous groups story will be action packed and drama filled. This adaptation will be hitting HBO Max on August 6.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Based on the book Dracula by Bram Stoker, this adaptation follows the centuries old vampire, Count Dracula, who comes to England to seduce his barrister Jonathan Harker’s fiancée, Mina Murray. As one of the most popular adaptations of this story, it will be very popular this Summer. This adaption of the infamous story will be available on Hulu starting August 1.

 It’s Kind of a Funny Story

 It’s Kind of a Funny Story follows a clinically depressed teenager who checks into a psychiatric ward. He bonds with a father and teenager girl his age, and he finds himself learning to be happy and introspective. This movie is based on the book by Ned Vizzini, and it stars Emma Roberts and Zach Galifiankis. This feel-good film is available on Hulu on August 1.

 The Hate U Give

Based on the book The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, this movie follows Starr Carter, who struggles switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly Black neighborhood where she lives, and the wealthy, mostly white prep school that she attends. Her uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer. This moving story will be available to stream on Hulu on August 15th.
