As the weather turns colder, we find ourselves bundled up in blankets with a mug of our favorite hot beverage, binge-watching more shows, more often. For the lit-lover, Hulu has no shortage of TV shows and movies to pique your interest.

The Handmaid’s Tale

This adaption of Margaret Atwood’s best-selling novel, a Hulu Original, is agonizing to watch—but so, so worth it. Set in a dystopian future in a totalitarian society ruled by a fundamentalist regime, women are treated as property. In an attempt to repopulate after environmental disasters, fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive—and find the daughter that was taken from her. Two seasons are currently available, with season three expected in 2019.

Sharp Objects

Based on the debut novel of Gillian Flynn (author of Gone Girl), this limited series is one of the most suspenseful shows of 2018. This psychological thriller follows Camille, played by Amy Adams, as she returns to her hometown as a reporter to investigate mysterious, unsolved crimes. She reunites with her estranged family, rekindling traumatic childhood memories, including the death of her little sister. As she searches for clues, Camille soon finds herself identifying with the victims a bit too closely.

Castle Rock

Unlike many of the other shows on this list, this is not a direct adaption of just one book. Castle Rock, Maine, is the setting of many of Stephen King’s novels, and this series puts us right in the heart of them. It unites King’s canon into one show with actors who starred in feature-length adaptions of King’s works, such as Sissy Spacek in “Carrie” and Bill Skarsgård in “It”, reprising their roles. The Hulu Original has already been confirmed for season two, with fans hoping for a summer 2019 release date.

The Strain

This show surrounds a viral outbreak of an ancient strain of vampirism in New York City and the team that is fighting against it to save humanity. You know that the adaption of the trilogy of the same name has to be amazingly close to the books because the authors are also the creators of the show. While The Strain is no longer on the air, it did have four seasons before the show ended, all of which are currently available on Hulu.

Fences

Denzel Washington directed, produced, and stars in this film adaption of the Pulitzer-winning play Fencesby August Wilson, who adapted the script himself. This family drama follows Troy Maxon (Washington), his wife Rose (Viola Davis), his children, and his best friend as they deal with issues like poverty, expectations, illiteracy, and infidelity. Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress at both the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes for this role.

The Murdoch Mysteries

This Canadian series, also known as The Artful Detective, is based on the Detective Murdoch books by Maureen Jennings. Yannik Bisson stars as William Murdoch, a police detective in Toronto. Known for its inclusion of historical characters and stunt casting, The Murdoch Mysteries is currently airing its twelfth season in Canada, but unfortunately, only the first six seasons are available on Hulu as of yet.

Nerve

Emma Roberts and Dave Franco star as Vee and Ian in this action-packed techno-thriller based on the novel by Jeanne Ryan. When her friend teases her about not being adventurous, Vee signs up as a player in Nerve, an online reality game where the watchers vote on dares for the players to complete. Vee’s first dare is to kiss a stranger, Ian. The two quickly become some of the most popular players—but when the stakes get too high, there’s no way out.

The Rules of Attraction

This dark comedy is based on the satirical novel of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis. It focuses on a handful of rowdy, spoiled college students in New Hampshire. It explores a love triangle between Lauren, Paul, and Sean; Paul is into Sean, but Sean is into Lauren. Lauren is dating Victor, but finds herself fantasizing about Sean. Sean assumes that the love letters he’s been getting are from her. Through this misunderstanding, the stakes keep escalating.

The Firm

Based on the novel by the same name that launched John Grisham’s career, this legal thriller stars Tom Cruise as Mitch McDeere, a promising Harvard Law graduate seduced by the money and perks of working at Bendini, Lambert & Locke. When he finds that their biggest client is a mafia family, their security department blackmails him into loyalty. When the FBI approaches him, he knows he’s really stuck.
